P. Ramlee's compositions drew on an extraordinarily wide palette: Bombay/Madras melodrama song traditions, Bengali New Theatres realism, Bangsawan stage practice from Penang, keroncong and asli musical forms, Indonesian and Sumatran cultural materials, and American comedy and European art cinema idioms. His music was modern, hybrid, and cosmopolitan — not the ethnonationalist folk music it is sometimes remembered as.
